Give me back my alcohol
4 August, 2008 ---- 9:59 PM

This is how this story goes:

My friend was drunk. He came back from the bar, real excited, and interrupted the conversation I was having with another guitar-playing-wannabe, after the barman gave him a shot of a drink he hadn’t heard of before. “This drink… that drink! That’s a great name! A great name for a song! Write a song about that! You-- yeah, I'm talking to you-- you shhould write a song about that!"

I was the designated driver, and, as such, believe it or not, was sober, so I just smiled and nodded my head and said "OK" to humour him.
“Sounds like a Spinal Tap song…”, I sez.

“Yeah! Fuck yeah! Spinal Tap! Do it!”.
And then he was gone, back into the drunken crowd.

I sort of dismissed it as the drunken ramblings of a drunken rambler.

And then, I had nothing better to do, so sat down one night recently and tried to write a song using the shot as the inspiration. I tried to go with a Spinal Tap flavour, but I couldn’t pull off a Big Bottom-inspired bass run, so I ended up in a different direction. It’s more Indy-punk. Or something. The song decided, not me. Although there is one Tap-inspired phrase in the second line, which is a tip of the hat.

 Play song

I don’t think this will wind up a band song though. I’ve sort of lost faith in us doing anything else. The last thing we did was a half-finished song in January. We caught up on Friday night to do what I had hoped was going to be Something, but instead we sat around doing Nothing. Well, watching nerd stuff on Youtube. Which was cool for just hanging out, but not for advancing our hostile world music takeover. So… I sorta realised that that ain’t going anywhere.

So I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing until I’m good enough to do something else and then I will go do something else, whether that’s by myself or with someone else. Or with them, if that’s the way things are meant to be. Whatever. Nothing’s written in rolling stone. Is it?
